May 11, 2020: The Minister of Finance Hon. Dr. Nigel Clarke will address a virtual Taxation Seminar to be hosted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Jamaica (ICAJ) on Wednesday, May 27, 2020. The seminar will be hosted live via the zoom platform between 12:00pm and 4:00pm.
Since Jamaica announced its first case of COVID-19 on March 10, restrictions on social gatherings, the closure of schools, and shorter hours of operation for businesses, have resulted in a marked downturn in economic activity. While some businesses have been able to pivot and continue to operate virtually or with significant modifications, many face an uncertain future, especially small and medium sized enterprises.
The Taxation Seminar will therefore focus attention on Jamaica after COVID-19 and the role of accountants, with the Minister of Finance scheduled to speak on the topic ‘Post-COVID Jamaica: Road to Recovery and the Role of Accountants’.
The Seminar will also explore Digital Taxation, and this topic will be presented by Ms. Allison Peart, Vice President of the ICAJ and Managing Director of A Peart Advisory Services. Other speakers include Ainsley Powell, Commissioner General of Tax Administration Jamaica, who will give an update from Tax Administration Jamaica. They will be joined by Ms. Prunella Vassell, ICAJ Past President who will cover the Taxation of Lump Sum and Redundancy Payments, and Everald Dewar, associate partner at BDO who will speak on the Revenue Administration Act.
